CHARACTER INTERPRETATION
» Appearance: Meiling stands tall as a woman of Chinese descent, with bright blue eyes and a fair complexion. Her red hair is worn long save for matching braids dangling down the sides of her face. Due to her active lifestyle, she is fit of body, though her youkai strength precludes her from needing to appear "bulked up" to show off this strength. That isn't to say that she doesn't cast the image of having a strong back. Her trademark clothes include flat shoes, a green Chinese style skirt and vest, over a white shirt with puffy sleeves and, on occasion, a matching pair of baggy pants. The gold star pinned to her matching green cap bears the etching of the Chinese character read as "long", which means "dragon". There is much speculation over if that is her species or not, but this is never proven, so her human form is all anyone will ever come face-to-face with.
» Suitability: n/a
» Orientation: Touhou, as a canon focused around bullet hell shooters, doesn't have many opportunities where sex or romance come up at all. The important cast is 99% female, but even this doesn't mean that the entire land of Gensokyo is nothing but lesbians. That said, Meiling's orientation is never made clear, so I will put this as "unknown", with a leaning that I feel Meiling can get along with just about anyone because of how approachable she is.
» Personality:
In speaking with Meiling, it would be hard to pin her down as a youkai at all. She is easy to strike up a conversation with, even in the midst of her duties. The gatekeeper speaks her mind frankly and with ease. It's all fine if someone wants to interrupt her in the middle of her work, unless their aim is to try to invade her territory or challenge her to a duel. For someone who does not show their pride in a disgusting manner, such an approach is one she cannot easily turn away from. You see, Meiling's position is as the gate guard of the Scarlet Devil Mansion -- and her Mistress would be quite disappointed if she just let intruders by so easily.
Her method of fighting is a balance of defense and offense. The strategy depends on a rounded mix of attack and evasion, her rainbow danmaku a brilliant but not particularly deadly display of "qi" (life force) projection, which is accented by her physical prowess, and Tai Chi martial arts style attacks. As such she is not very aggressive and easy to overpower in the exact sort of one-on-one duels that Meiling is easy to lure into. Her pride as a youkai, a gatekeeper, and a protector of those she holds dear is on the line if she loses! Yet losing is precisely what Meiling's reputation is based on. What does one expect from facing off against such an unremarkable youkai? It isn't as if Meiling has a plethora of spell cards or abilities to call upon, nor can she regenerate or make copies of herself on a whim. When you fight Meiling, she puts her all into the task! One must overpower her swiftly, for she is slow to admit defeat, and chasing after her when she flees is just part of her strategy from the start.
She is often seen as unreliable, and lazy. Taking a midday siesta doesn't help with this impression, though she will claim that she's not slacking off in that way! Even if she does try hard, talk a big talk, and gets back up even after being brought down. This persistence and her presence before all whom observe and approach the Mansion must be why she even still has a job despite these shortcomings. It could also be that her mistress does enjoy teasing her a little.
In addition to her role as a gatekeeper, Meiling is also a gardener for the property. What better way for someone who can exert some control over the force of life in all things? This and her protectiveness just speaks of a nurturing personality, in tune and aware of her surroundings. It's no wonder she gets confused and distraught when things don't go as planned, such as Patchouli's unexpected crop circle experiments in the gardens. Her emotions can get the better of her in this way, she felt helpless to change the flowers to another color (a skill she does not possess), and genuinely distraught over the change since no one else was at all concerned. They just thought the odd patterns looked beautiful. When Patchouli came forward as the culprit, all she could do was wonder what would possess the wizard to do such a thing. Another surefire way to get a reaction out of her would be to discuss China, for she is quite attached to the proud and long history of the land.
Meiling can, on occasion, blow things out of proportion. There was another incident where thoughts inspired by some manga she had been reading influenced her dreams. A great god of calamity was threatening Gensokyo with disasters, and it was up to her to prevent this catastrophe! In her dream, unlike in real life, Meiling imagined herself as a true hero. She saw through the disguises of the henchmen sent to invade the Mansion, defeated all opponents in her path, and faced off against the big boss itself. She was quite embarrassed to wake up and discover it was all a dream, but also uneasy because she swore that the comic was not the only source of inspiration for such imaginings in the first place. Ever since that, there hasn't been a single incident in which she was directly involved, but it's safe to say that gossip and hearsay would have found its way to her from speaking to locals, or even through the publications of the tengu. This is another benefit to not putting up any barriers between herself and others, and thus maintaining the very human-like persona in her daily life.

--that it? [ The feed cuts on in the middle of the sentence. The red-haired woman is shown from a low angle, her face turned to the side, and a finger jabbed right into the frame of vision. It seems she's talking to someone off-screen. ] Just like that? And it's on? This technology really is amazing...
[ Seems like she noticed the screen out of the corner of her eye! The redhead brings the device up to eye level, focusing on her face. ] Oh, there we go! Hello there! My name is Meiling, and it seems like I've been captured. Well, I would say that but everyone is treating me so nice here, it's hard to believe it. And the room I was put into isn't really a cell. It's way too nice for a simple worker like me, and--
[ Abruptly, she stops, a hand coming up to adjust her cap. ] ... I forgot what I was going to talk about.
Oh! [ Meiling scrunches her face up in thought a moment. ] I'm sure it had something to do with the room, but I guess that's not important. What's important is that I find out if anyone else from the Scarlet Devil Mansion is here! [ Who is she talking to; herself, or the camera? By the face she's making, eyes focused above and beyond the camera, it's hard to say. ] Mistress, can you see me? Chief? Miss Patchouli? [ Going down the list of people who are likely to scold her heavily for being absent like this. ] I'm not sure how I got myself into this situation, but please let me apologize for my carelessness! [ A hand is raised, the fingers curled into a fist as determination burns in her eyes. ] If you are out there, I will find you, so please do not worry! I'll be on the way out of this place soon enough, and then... and then....
[ As if on cue, her stomach groans and complains. Meiling makes a worried face, and she doesn't know to turn the feed off before she lowers the device and turns once more to the stranger from before. ] Didn't you say there was a dining hall somewhere? Is it this w--? [ Her voice cuts off as she stuffs the handheld device into her waistband. ]

Her opponent was swift, that much was true, but Meiling's guard was the stuff of legends. Her legend! The attacks bounced right off of her arms and legs, or were pushed aside with her hands with practiced ease. If they were looking for an opening, they would have to try a lot harder than they have been. Why, just standing there contemplating their relative strength it was clear to the gatekeeper than this fight would go on a while and in no way could they -- be capable of a sudden burst of speed, bursting through her defenses and striking her in the neck. With a hacking cough, Meiling collapsed to her knees on the ground, one hand down to brace herself and the other on her throat. The pain was blinding and wet choking sounds filled the air as the entire world around her went silent and black.
--that's the point where she woke up from her dream. This wasn't the first time she had fallen asleep standing upright, leaned into a little nook or alley between buildings. It was, however, the first time she had experienced that specific sort of discomfort that persisted after waking. Instinctively, Meiling brought a hand up to her neck to make sure that everything was okay. That it really was a dream, and she was in no danger. Alert eyes glanced this way and that, the bright midday sun shielded from her gaze by the green cap pulled low over her brow.
"Ugh, that was really mean of my subconscious," she mumbled, her fingers catching against the edge of the leather collar she wore. The fit was tighter than before, she knew that for sure. Meiling sighed. "So it's like they said... it really does tighten over time. What a cruel spell, this is."
It's easy enough to forget even the most important things when caught up in other activities. Meiling has spent the majority of her time since her arrival either seeking out familiar faces, exploring unfamiliar places, or just generally dorking around and being social via the marvelous network device. It was only a matter of time before she had to...
Meiling adjusted her cap and pushed off of the wall with her foot. Just outside of her little hiding spot, people wandered the streets. She's sure, from what she saw, that life here moved on much like it normally would. Some of those individuals would be off to shop for clothes, procure food for meals, conduct business, visit friends, or... be traveling to or from intimate encounters. In all honesty, it's something she hadn't thought of in a long time. Here, in this place -- in Atia -- it was just a fact of life. Cruel? Yes, being forced to do it so often, and the pressure to act swiftly was not something she was immune to. If it meant her survival, though, then Meiling understood what she had to do.
The hard part was the how-and-when-and-*who*. Is it okay to consider it a burden upon someone else, be they friend or stranger alike, to help her with this problem if it is something everyone suffers from equally? Maybe she can get over it and ask for help soon. Maybe she'll put it off just one more day. She isn't so stubborn to test the limits of her body and maximize the time until she has to have sex, no. That would be foolish and, besides, if she overestimated her durability and died because of it... that is a shame she couldn't so easily wash away.
Meiling stepped out from the alley and pulled the network device from her pocket. There have been many whom she has spoken with since her arrival. Some friendly and open, others not so much, but all informative in their own ways. Perhaps there is someone yet out there who has had the same thoughts as her, or was in the same situation. If she could support them, it would go a long way toward making her feel better about the situation, and not nearly so helpless and lost.
"Hmm," she hummed in thought as her eyes scanned the list of names. "I wonder if I can count this as part of my exercise routine..."
